Five Minute Friday - Bacon

Every Friday we unite for five minutes. Only five minutes, that's all we get, that's all we have. And then, right where we are, no edits or second-thoughts, we publish those words. This week, we write on bacon.

Is this really the prompt this week?
How is a vegetarian who has not touched meat for 14 years going to write a meaningful post on bacon?
Here I go.

I became the CEO of a non-profit many years ago.
And there are days that it feels like it just happened
and I can remember making this unbelievable decision.
I can remember sitting and talking to board members about my qualifications and if I can do it,
all like it was just there.
And there are times that I feel like I have done nothing else but this job.
There are times that I can't remember my life before it.
And just last night, we held another event to push the mission forward.
Another event in which the community poured into our venue and people showed up for our kids, our work.

And last night, more than any other time in my career,
I realized how much more important it is to be who we are
be true to ourselves
commit to the work
commit to the kids
tell the community our story
than it is to just bring home the bacon.

We are good
we are strong
we are fighting for a cause that I believe in down to my toes
we will shine
we will continue forward
we will make it about our work
we will show up
we will continue to give it our all.

We will fight this glorious fight because they need our voice.
They need a childhood
in order to become healthy adults.
We will show up and we will do more than bring home the bacon.
We will be their light.

Oh how I love your take on this! Bacon was hard, right? But you used it in such a way that we didn't want bacon, we wanted to get behind your vision and mission and jump in too! Great post!

Bacon was hard! I absolutely thought I was going to skip this week but it felt wrong, to not join you all feels wrong. So glad I did because I shared this with the team and they loved it too!

  2. Miss Mindy says:

How is it that the first blog I chose to read today was yours?? I too am vegetarian, and I thought "Ugh, what am I going to write about bacon?" (One of the last meats I gave up and admittedly still crave once in a while.) Thank you for thinking outside the bacon box! Loved your post! Blessings!

Thank you! Bacon and chicken wings were the last I gave up for the same reason! This was a really good post prompt! I think many people found their way around it.

  3. Alina says:

"We will show up." Sometimes that's the most important thing, the bravest thing.

    1. childhood says:

      It truly is.

This was a challenge for me but you did an awesome job!!!!
